What goes into a new roof

Scroll down to see a roof go on, layer by layer.

  1. 1Rafters

I check the timbers first and sort out anything rotten, split or sagging before anything goes on top.

  2. 2Breathable membrane

This goes over the rafters. It keeps wind-driven rain out and lets damp air out of the loft.

  3. 3Treated battens

These are nailed across the rafters at the right spacing for the slate or tile, so every row lines up.

  4. 4Slates or tiles

Each one is laid and nailed by hand, lapping the row below so the water runs off.

  5. 5Lead flashing

Lead is dressed into the joint wherever the roof meets a chimney or a wall, so water can't get in there.

  6. 6Ridge

Ridge tiles close off the top and are fixed down so they stay put in high winds.

  7. 7Fascia and gutter

A new fascia and gutter at the bottom catch the water and carry it away from the walls.

Is your roof failing?

Most roofs show the signs long before water gets in. This slate roof is a good example of what to look out for.

  1. 01

    Lichen growth

Lichen spreading across the slates holds damp against them and slowly wears the surface away.

  2. 02

    Broken slates

Cracked slates, with broken pieces left lying loose on the roof.

  3. 03

    Slipped and missing slates

Slates sliding out of line and leaving gaps, so rain can reach the felt and battens underneath.

Seeing any of these on your roof? Send me a photo on WhatsApp and I'll tell you what I can see.

Rebuilding a crumbling verge

The verge is the mortar edge where the roof tiles finish at the top of a gable wall. This one had cracked and was coming away, so I stripped it out and rebuilt it.

01The old verge

The old cement verge had cracked and was coming away, with moss in the gaps.

02Stripped back

I lifted the edge tiles and knocked out all the old mortar.

03New undercloak

A new undercloak along the edge, with the tiles laid back on top.

04Fresh mortar

The tiles bedded on fresh mortar and finished to a smooth, straight edge.

05Finished

A clean, even line from the eaves up to the ridge.
